Bella

Here's Bella, a little Boston Terrior who runs the house. I brought her into the studio and photograpghed her in front of a blue background. I then applied a paint effect to almost make it a cartoon. Just one more image of my doggie to plaster all over the house!

Portrait retouching really does make a difference

Take a look at these two images. Can you see the difference? Every final image I create is retouched and processed to enhance one's best features. Don't we all want to be portrayed in the best light possible? I don't want to completely change the way you look. Just smooth out life's little character lines, open the eyes a little, brighten the teeth, smooth out stray hair. When was the last time you had a professional portrait created?

Middleton Fire District #1 Building

Today I delivered and helped hang(along with chief Aaron Harris)the framed print of the new Middleton Fire district #1 building wall print to the station, which is on University Ave in Middleton WI. This image was created at 4:50am in June of last year. It is an original HDR image saved in raw format, processed for high dynamic range, and tweaked to produce the final results. It is 32"x48" and is the largest image I have framed in my 31 years in the photography business! In July, the fire district will hold an open house, and I hope that you will stop by and take a look at my work, and say hello to our volunteer firefighters!

Photographing the inside of your house

This is an image of my dining room. Design by Debi Forrestal. I used my Canon 5d mark 2 on a tripod with a wide angle lens (15mm). The 5d mark 2 has a full frame sensor, so it can record more area than a standard APS size sensor that most digital cameras have. No additional light sources were used.

This particular image is actually a combination of three different exposures. It's called HDR, or high dynamic range photography. My camera will allow me to set it up so that it will take three exposures in immediate succession, the first exposure is under exposed by 2 stops, the second exposure is spot on, and the third exposure is over exposed by two stops. Combine the three, tweak in photoshop, and presto! This is the result.

Finished processing, cropping and posting images of WKOW-TV evening news anchors. Fun to go inside the inner studios of a busy news organization. Simple light set-up...two unbrellas, one on each side. Hand held Canon 5D mark2, wide angle lens, 1/60 sec. at f5.6.

6 ways to a better senior portrait

Hire a professional who's work you love. Do NOT try to do this at home with your camera. I may own a saw, but I'm certainly no woodworker.

Tell your photographer what you like in a portrait, and don't like.
Girls must apply make-up to smooth skin and enhance the eyes. And you must like your hair style. If you don't like your hair, you won't like your portraits.
Boys must apply a skin make-up if blemishes are a problem. I can take out a few, but more than that becomes an issue.
Select your clothing with care. Darks for traditional studio head and shoulders studies, color for contemporary studio and outdoors.
Get a good night's sleep. Tired eyes are not very flattering.
